Winter trekking in Primorye

The nature of Primorsky region is beautiful and magnificent in every season. Winter is not the reason to stay at home all the time. One of the ways to spend your weekend or vacation is to go hiking or trekking in the Ussuri taiga or climb a mountain. There are numerous places worth travelling in Primorye and the vicinity of Vladivostok, even in winter. Pidan mountain of Sikhote-alin range, beautiful beaches of Khasan area, the islands of Peter the Great bay which are often accessible by car in winter (yes, driving on the ice is another unforgettable experience).

Everything is covered in bright white snow, staying silent and untouched by civilization. The air is crystal clear and smells incredibly fresh and icy. All of this is giving you the feeling of a special connection with nature.

Rivers are frozen, but water is even more accessible than in summer. You just melt snow or ice and get fresh distilled water.

It is the only time of the year when you can see footprints of Ussuri tiger without too much effort if you know where to look. To be fair, you can see tiger footprints in summer as well, but only on remote closed beaches on a rare occasion.

Keep in mind though, that it’s not an easy activity. Winter trekking in the forest means staying in a tent in the cold. Temperatures outside can be as low as 25-30 degrees below zero. But on the bright side, it’s not a problem if you have a portable russian sauna with you, that can warm you up no matter how cold it is outside.

Hiking could be easier since it’s not difficult to find acceptable housing options in not very remote areas.

All of that is still worth it – the magic of winter nature is difficult to describe, you can only feel it.
