Vladivostok city lights and Vityaz seaside tour

We only had one day in Vladivostok but we got to see the highlights without much effort. The golden bridge was very interesting and the architecture of the city was quite impressive.

Vladivostok is a beautiful city! The sights which Sergei had picked out were all interesting. The bridge was amazing. Traffic was a bit crazy and the weather was humid but hey, that’s what travelling is about!

The excursion seemed to be as comprehensive as possible. I liked the lighthouse the most, it was good to watch family groups enjoy the sun. Now that I am aware, we needed more time in Vladivostok.

Summer is warm with frequent rains, storms and fog. The average temperature in August +21 C. In winter, the water temperature of the reserve is similar to the Arctic (-1,8 ° C), and in the summer – with subtropical (up to +26 ° C).
Key research areas: study and mapping of benthic biodiversity and terrestrial communities; monitoring and evaluation of the impact of anthropogenic and natural factors on the biota of the reserve; studying the biology of rare and endangered species.
Organization of protection and environmental education is one of the important aspects. The reserve had participated in international projects under the auspices of IUCN, WWF, NOOA.
it has been a member of the Association of East Asian Biosphere Reserve since 2003 and a participant of the UNDP-GEF “Strengthening the Marine and Coastal Protected Areas of Russia.”

Winter trekking in Primorye
The nature of Primorsky region is beautiful and magnificent in every season. Winter is not the reason to stay at home all the time. One of the ways to spend your weekend or vacation is to go hiking or trekking in the Ussuri taiga or climb a mountain. There are numerous places worth travelling in Primorye and the vicinity of Vladivostok, even in winter. Pidan mountain of Sikhote-alin range, beautiful beaches of Khasan area, the islands of Peter the Great bay which are often accessible by car in winter (yes, driving on the ice is another unforgettable experience). Everything is covered in bright white snow, staying silent and untouched by civilization. The air is crystal clear and smells incredibly fresh and icy. All of this is giving you the feeling of a special connection with nature. Rivers are frozen, but water is even more accessible than in summer. You just melt snow or ice and get fresh distilled water. It is the only time of the year when you can see footprints of Ussuri tiger without too much effort if you know where to look. To be fair, you can see tiger footprints in summer as well, but only on remote […]

Hiking evening at the Russian island
The bridge to the Russian island made it much easier to get there. Before the bridge, the only way to get to the island was to take a ferry or a small private boat. Now it’s only a 15-minute drive from the city centre and you’re on the island. Such getaway so close to Vladivostok is a good place to calm your mind and relax, and it attracts more and more travellers from the whole Primorsky region every year. In summer people often spend weekends at the Russian island doing hiking and barbeque. Nevertheless, many beaches are still hard to get to and thus remain very quiet. People go there to walk on rocky beaches, listen to the sound of the sea and enjoy the sunset. Some places even remain hardly known to the general public. The roads to such places are usually made of gravel and require an off-road 4wd vehicle.

One sunset in Anisimovka
Isn’t it a fantastic feeling when you can go out your house and see a beautiful mountain range? If you are staying in Primorye, this might be the case. A small village called Anisimovka in Shkotovo area offers access to mountains of southern Sikhote-Alin range. The village was established in 1901 as a chinese settlement named Kangauz (Warm valley). Aside from trekking on the famous mountains Pidan and Falaza, you can spend an evening enjoying the sunset on a small hill of the Vorobey (Sparrow) range nearby the village, which is just 10 minutes away by car. The route is quite easy and doesn’t take much time. After having crossed the railway and climbed up the hill you get a view of the whole valley. The smells and the sounds will soothe you away from your everyday problems. Wild peony and lily flowers, small rabbit holes and birds flying around create unique atmosphere of a wild meadow. Breathe it in and enjoy the evening with a good company of friends.

Flying over the sea on the Crabbe peninsula
September is the best time for hiking and travelling around Primorye. The weather is not so hot anymore, and the nights are still warm. A team of rope-jumpers from Vladivostok called “Droprope” went to Khasan area to climb on one of the capes of Krabbe peninsula. It’s a very popular place for summer vacations and hiking. We present you some amazing pictures, taken by one of the team members – Mikhail Simanchuk.

Dersu. Part 1
If you don’t have a car, getting to Dersu wouldn’t be very simple. There are no direct buses going there, and Dalnekutsky Airport has become a beautiful legend long time ago. But the more difficult to get to the destination, the more interesting it is. Our journey has been very extreme. At 20:30 we boarded the bus Vladivostok – Vostretsovo and started cursing everything straight for 11 hours – the bus, the terrible roads and the whole idea to use this type of transport, rather than, say, a train. At night, sleeping while sitting on uncomfortable seats is not difficult, it is simply impossible. And you can’t look out the window – it’s dark, and you can’t see anything. The only option left is to turn from side to side, dreaming of the next stop, no matter where, just to get out and get some fresh air. So, at 7:30 am the bus stopped at the store which is also a ticket office in the village Roshchino – our final stop. Heavy rain, that greeted caused us to worry about the future path. Ticket offece of the village Roshchino settled in a corner of a large store. A woman sat […]

From the summer to the hills
Autumn begins much earlier in the Hills than in the city or on the islands. At the end of September it’s already chilly in the shade of the trees, and in the morning the tent is covered with frost. But the air is more transparent – you can see all the cities in the district from a big mountain, and at night on the horizon you can see the light dots of the Russian bridge. And here we go again together in the night forest, shivering from the sound of breaking branches. The storm just passed and we had to sit under the roof until midnight, waiting for the rainfall to stop. There’s a full moon in the sky and the storm cloud has moved to the horizon and is still blazing. It’s light and you can walk without a flashlight. Water drops fall from trees on the head and neck, roll down under the clothing and evaporate from the body, overheated by walking . The water evaporates from the road too – the mist is not carried away by the wind and is spreading low over the ground, recalling the atmosphere of the movie “The Headless Horseman.” We’ve been making […]

Russian tradition of cabbage pickling
Pickled cabbage is one of the fundamental russian dishes. The history of it traces back to the Old Russia. When winters are long, and there were no stores to offered vegetables, people had to prepare them for winter themselves. This tradition is still strong to this day. Many countries have sauerkraut in their traditional food lists. But probably nobody in the world consumes as much of it as our Russian people do. And no country has as big of a variety of pickled cabbage dishes as the Russian cuisine has. No winter feast is complete without sauerkraut. It’s a very healthy side dish as well, so it is always prepared in large quantities. Usually the start of pickled cabbage preparations falls on Sergiev Day (October 8th), which is also called Sergei Kapustnik (kapusta = cabbage in russian). But the general condition is for the outside temperature to be about 0 degrees Celsius, so the day depends on the area of the country. For example, Vladivostok is one of the most southern cities of Russia, so people start preparing sauerkraut only in the middle of November. Another condition is for the moon to be in a certain phase. Not all beginners […]

Winter surfing in Vladivostok
Vladivostok is the city of people with strong spirit. We are used to weather challenges. We are not scared of hurricanes, snowfalls or storms – we just dress warmly, wrap ourselves in a raincoat and go out as if nothing’s happened. It’s hard to impress a local resident with a temperature of +5 degrees celsius on the New Year’s Eve or a seagull flying tail first if the wind is too strong. But winter surfing is a relatively new for Primorsky Krai phenomenon. It’s new, but I would say, inevitable. Surfing became a rapidly growing sport, and in recent years it gained popularity among local fans of extreme sports and the sea. And, of course, cold weather and snow cannot stop surfers from riding the waves in winter season. When it’s below zero and snowing outside, all you need is a thicker wetsuit, stronger tea in a thermos and a warm company of friends. Today we present to your attention a small photo story about winter surfing in Vladivostok. By the way, if you also like riding the waves among ice floes and sea lions or you’ve always wanted to try it, contact us and we will tell you how […]

Epiphany bathing despite the wind and blizzard in Vladivostok
Epiphany is one of the main Christian holidays. The holiday begins in the night of January 18 when all Orthodox Christians celebrate the Epiphany Eve. In Russian orthodox christians the Epiphany Day is associated with sanctifying the water, including natural reservoirs. The sanctified water is believed to heal and wash away any sins, as well as dark spirits, walking around on the earth surface during Yule festival. Epiphany bathing is performed as a sacred act of cleaning and renewal. As the holiday is associated with severe colds, all natural reservoirs are generally frozen by that time of the year. Therefore, cross-shaped holes are cut in the ice. These are named Jordan – after the river between Israel and Jordan. The bathing should be performed at night, when the outside temperature is the coldest – sometimes up to 30 degrees Celsius below zero, or even colder in the northern regions of Russia. This year’s Epiphany eve turned out to bring really nasty weather to Vladivostok: the speed of the wind reached more than 30 meters per second, and the snow didn’t stop for two days. Nevertheless, many people still came to challenge their health by diving into ice-cold water. It should […]

Dog sledding competition
When you live in Russia, you have to think of many ways to enjoy cold weather. Just imagine: it’s cold outside for at least 6 months. One of the ways to get yourself and your dogs outdoors and have fun is participating in dog sledding competitions. Snow dog owners from all over the region organize such events at least 3 times during winter. Typical breeds to participate in the races are huskies, malamutes and samoyeds. There are two main types of sleds in the race – 2 dogs and 4 dogs. It depends on the weight of the “rider” and on the desired speed. Sleds with more than 4 dogs in them can go really fast – faster than 40 kilometers per hour, which requires some serious skills. Such competitions are always fun to watch and exciting to participate in, both for the owners and for the dogs. Emotions are on peak, and there’s a lot of barking and howling all around. Enjoy our photo story on the event and feel the spirit of the race.
